Rent Receipt Request Letter
What it's for
A written request asking your landlord to provide receipts or a payment history for the rent you've paid.
Educational — information, not legal advice, and not attorney-reviewed.
When to use it
Use this when you need documented proof of your rent payments — for a rental history, a dispute, or a benefits application, for example — and your landlord hasn't been providing receipts.
What to include
- Your name, the rental address, and the date
- A request for receipts or a written payment history covering the period you specify
- The reason you need the documentation, if you choose to share it
- Your preferred format for receiving it, such as paper, email, or through the app
- A reasonable deadline for the response, consistent with your state's rules
- A note that you'll keep your own payment records going forward
What to attach or keep
- Your own bank statements, money orders, or payment app records
- Any prior rent receipts you already have
- Lease terms showing your rent amount and due date
- Any earlier requests for receipts and your landlord's response
Before you send
- Check whether your state requires landlords to provide receipts, using the app
- Keep the request simple and specific about the time period you need
- Send it using a method that gives you proof of delivery, and keep a dated copy
