Definition
Formally giving the rental back to the landlord, ending the tenancy.
Why it matters to renters
Doing it properly — keys returned, forwarding address given — protects your deposit and closes your obligations.
Example
Returning the keys and moving out by the agreed date is a surrender of the premises.
