Rent escrow
Definition
Paying rent into a protected account (often court-supervised) instead of to the landlord, in some repair disputes.
Why it matters to renters
Where allowed, it can pressure repairs without the risk of simply withholding rent — but the process is strict.
Example
Some states let a tenant escrow rent until serious repairs are made.
