Emotional support animal (ESA)

Definition

An animal that provides comfort to a person with a disability, recognized under fair-housing rules differently from a pet.

Why it matters to renters

It can qualify for a reasonable accommodation even under a no-pets policy, usually without a pet fee.

Example

A landlord may need to allow an ESA as an accommodation, with proper documentation.
